Another great nights entertainment at the QL. Our usual small but exclusive audience was bolstered by the group having a 'Xmas In July' party at Jarrah's Brasserie who came over for a listen (at the invitation of one of the bar staff) Only under the proviso that we would sing some Christmas songs, which we did!
'In House' Dan McReed started off the festivities with his stand-up routine & after getting a few good laughs sang some of his own songs, accompanying himself on the keyboard. He has been a great addition to the QL, not only for his solo performances but for the way he accompanies other singers & makes everyone feel at home & welcome. 'In House' Dan played with a brave contender over from the Xmas Party crowd, Maureen, who sang 'Crazy' and got rapturous applause from the crowd. Another Xmas party attendee, Len joined the stage for a solo un-backed performance of an old Bing Crosby number and got a very warm reception - just what an Open Mic night is all about!
A new QL act, 'TRIP' were next to take to the stage & first to christian the drum deus at QL. They played a great set of originals with Chris Wilson (The REAL Chris Wilson) on bass, expertly backed by brothers Ben & Tim on guitar/vocals & drums - brilliant young musos! TRIP were followed by our regulars 'The Flaming Galahs' who grooved along with the usual cool & did only the second live performance of their new song (a sample of which can be found under their info in the 'Artists' section of this page) to the delight of the crowd. We hope it stays in the set-list - great song!
Rex Havoc did his usual fill-in songs & even got up to do a classic 'Eddie Vedder changes the words version' of Pearl Jam's 'Betterman' with TRIP, who did TWO encore sets & totally rocked out. So good were TRIP that they got reclusive QL Artist Co-ordinator Leyne up to sing The Doors classic 'LA Woman'. The QL crowd waits with baited breath as Leyne withholds her guitar originals from the crowd.
The night was capped off with TRIP doing the Hendrix classic 'Purple Haze' in fine style & from an audience request they even rocked out with an AC/DC number. We sure hope TRIP will be joining the QL again! We'll keep you up to date. Don't forget to spread the word about the Open Mic and (as they say in Iraq), bring a few more bodies in!
